Here at Heritage Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM Harrisburg, we are committed to educating you on every aspect of your vehicle and its care. One of your RAM parts that doesn’t get enough of a spotlight is the alternator. This is an incredibly important component of your vehicle, so read on to learn what it is, and why you need it.

What is an Alternator?

The alternator is a generator located under the hood of your vehicle next to the engine. It helps convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and disperse it throughout your vehicle. If you look under your hood, you’ll notice this component because of the belt wrapped around it.

It’s incredibly important and helps make sure that your vehicle is powered for the journey ahead. If there’s no alternator, then your vehicle can’t even start.

Servicing RAM Parts

More often than naught, whatever service that needs to be done to your alternator involves replacing the belt. Over time, the belt can crumble apart because of the constant heat and rotation.

You also may have to have your cooling fan serviced to make sure that the alternator doesn’t overheat. These repairs are relatively inexpensive and staying ahead of them helps prevent more expensive repairs such as replacing the alternator altogether.

Replacing an alternator usually costs between $250 and $450. Keeping a bad alternator in your car can hurt other aspects of your vehicle such as the engine. Remember, replacing an engine costs thousands so it’s much more fiscally responsible to replace the alternator to avoid disaster.

You’ll know there is an issue with your alternator when you notice your vehicle isn’t starting up as easily, or if you hear odd sounds under your hood. When that happens, it’s time to visit the service center here at Heritage Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Harrisburg
