The 2023 Dodge Hornet has only arrived recently at Heritage Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM Harrisburg, but it took a while to get here. It originally debuted more than a decade ago and there have been a few big changes to it in that time. Let’s look at the history behind this new Dodge SUV.
The Original Dodge Hornet Concept
Before SUVs and crossovers started taking over the roads, an MPV was a popular type of family car. These multi-purpose vehicles could be spacious, with plenty of room for cargo, people, or both, even when they were on the smaller side.
The Dodge brand introduced a small MPV of its own at an auto show in 2006. Not all concept vehicles make it to the production stage, but the Dodge Hornet was being readied for a release in 2010. The hope was that it would be big in both the United States and Europe, especially with younger drivers in urban environments.
A New Take on the Dodge Hornet a Decade Later
Unfortunately, a financial crisis threw the auto industry, and much of the world, into disarray in 2008. Many automakers had to rethink their lineups, so the Dodge Hornet was one vehicle that simply got cut and never got its chance to hit dealerships. It would take more than a decade for this model to finally make its debut as a production vehicle.
It’s also quite different from the concept version. That model was powered by a 1.6-liter supercharged engine that could produce 170 horsepower, but the 2023 Dodge Hornet is a plug-in hybrid with nearly 100 more horsepower. There’s also an even sportier R/T model available.
